General:

A backwater valve is a device that prevents sewage from flowing back into the building from the house sewer. It is installed in a manhole on the street sewer, which connects to the house sewer. The damper opens when there is no flow in either direction and closes when there is flow in only one direction.

With the help of backwater valves from the street sewer via the house sewer into the building, you can prevent backwater quickly and inexpensively. These check valves are installed in flood-prone areas such as basements or underground garages.

The main function of the backwater valve is to prevent backflow when sewage from the house sewer (e.g., due to high pressure) flows backward through the house drain onto the property and then into an adjacent street sewer. The device consists of a flap valve, which is operated either manually or automatically, and a small chamber for storing water at times when it is not allowed to flow back.

Backwater valves are used in combination with other devices such as check valves and sump pumps to prevent sewage from an external source from flowing back into a building’s plumbing system.

A backwater valve can be installed inexpensively and quickly without disrupting the owner’s daily life.
