Stop log system guide - prices, installation & comparison
In this dam beam system guide, you will find out why aluminum dam beams are the best choice, how the system works, what it costs and how you can find the right solution in just a few minutes using our dam beam system configurator .
Floods, heavy rainfall and backwater events are constantly increasing. Traditional sandbags are expensive, unreliable and often used too late. An aluminum stop log system offers a durable, flexible and professional solution for private and industrial flood protection.
What is a stop log system and when is it useful?
Lifelong functionality thanks to high-quality aluminum
Our flood protection aluminum profiles are made exclusively from high-quality aluminum, which is produced directly in Austria under high quality standards. One thing is particularly important when it comes to flood protection: lasting functional reliability over decades.
Advantages of aluminum at a glance:
Stainless & corrosion resistant: Ideal for permanent contact with water.
Lightweight: quick assembly possible without outside help.
Extremely resilient: withstands high water pressure and floating debris.
Weather resistant: Does not warp in heat or cold.
In contrast to inexpensive wooden, plastic or DIY store systems, aluminum retains its stability and accuracy of fit. Replacing sandbags with dam beams means: less effort, maximum safety and no disposable solution.
Seals & assembly - what really matters
Stop logs with EPDM seal from Austria
All our systems are equipped with durable EPDM seals. We guarantee you a long-term supply of spare parts so that your system remains 100% leak-proof for years to come. Important for storage: Ideally, store the beams indoors or under a cover to protect the seals from unnecessary UV radiation.
Sealing in the event of unevenness (floor & wall)
As houses are rarely perfectly level, our system reliably compensates for floor unevenness of up to 9°. In addition, the soft sponge rubber EPDM seal ensures that even coarser floor joints are completely sealed. The scope of delivery includes a special installation adhesive that remains temperature-resistant from -40 °C to +90 °C. Thanks to this addition, all joints on the wall rails can be permanently and perfectly sealed.
Areas of application: From the front door to the garage entrance
The aluminum stop log system is versatile:
Industry & commerce: Whether as an extinguishing water barrier or entrance bulkhead - our systems are designed for high loads.
Flood protection for doors: We mostly use the compact System 25, which is ideal for front doors and side entrances.
Garage doors & wide driveways: The storage height is important here. For widths over 4 meters, we recommend an intermediate pillar.
Stop log system configurator - 3 steps to the price
The 3 installation variants: Flexible for every building situation
Choosing the right installation method is crucial for structural safety and visual integration into your building. Depending on the substrate (concrete, brick, full thermal insulation) and the available space, we offer three tried-and-tested methods:
1. installation between the wall (reveal)
This is the classic reveal installation. The U-guide rails are fixed directly to the inside of the door or window opening.
Advantage: The system is almost flush with the façade and is visually very discreet. Ideal for front doors if there is enough space for the holes.
2. mounting in front of the wall (face mounting)
With face mounting, the rails are screwed to the front of the outer wall (façade).
Advantage: The full passage width is retained. This is the standard solution for garage doors or buildings with full thermal insulation (VWS), as the load is transferred directly into the load-bearing masonry using spacer sleeves.
3. mortised mounting (flush)
Here, the guide rails are set directly into the masonry and plastered flush.
Advantage: The highest quality solution. The system is virtually invisible in everyday use and offers no mechanical attack surface. Perfect for new buildings or as part of a façade renovation.
💡 Expert tip: Insufficient sealing between the rail and masonry is the most common installation error. We supply a permanently elastic special sealant in every kit, which remains flexible even at extreme temperatures of -40°C to +90°C and prevents "trailing".
Mounting variant
Description
Your advantages
1. in the reveal
Between the walls of the opening.
Discreet appearance, almost flush, space-saving.
2. on the wall
Front mounting on the outer wall.
Ideal for VWS, full passage width is retained.
3. mortised
Flush-mounted in the masonry.
Virtually invisible, extremely protected against floating debris.
Absolutely tight: installation kit with professional sealant
Insufficient sealing between the guide rail and the masonry is one of the most common mistakes made during self-installation. If a gap is left at this critical point, water will inevitably push through behind the rail.
This is why we supply a high-quality installation kit containing a permanently elastic adhesive sealant with every project. This special sealant remains completely flexible even at extreme temperatures from -40 °C to +90 °C.

Maximum stability for wide driveways: the system with intermediate pillar
To ensure that the barrier can withstand the enormous water pressure, we integrate highly stable intermediate columns into the Loidhold PREFA system.
Why an intermediate column makes sense:
Static safety: Halves the span width and minimizes deflection.
Handling: Instead of a 6m beam, you handle two handy 3m pieces.
Partial protection: One side can serve as access while the other is already closed.
Installing the floor sleeve and sealing the floor slab
Flood protection is only as secure as its connection to the ground. To prevent underflow, follow these professional instructions:
Substrate: Loosen paving stones - a concrete substrate is the only safe solution.
Ground socket: Set in concrete precisely and flush (no tripping hazard).
Sealing: Seal the critical area between the concrete edge and the garage slab with special sealant.
Sealing surface: The EPDM seal can only close 100% on smooth concrete.
EPDM seal vs. foam rubber & profiles
EPDM seals are clearly technically superior for permanent flood protection. They are permanently elastic and UV-resistant, whereas sponge rubber becomes brittle over time.
Guide rails:
u-profiles: Simple design for lower loads.
h-profiles: Greater stability and better load distribution for large openings.
Installation with full thermal insulation (VWS)
Buildings with VWS have special requirements. The insulation must not assume a load-bearing function. Solution: Use of spacer sleeves to transfer the load directly into the masonry and avoid underrunning.
Storing and maintaining the stop log system correctly
Store the stop logs in wall brackets or aluminum protective boxes so that they are free of tension. Once a year, you should check the condition of the seals and clean the rails to remove any dirt.
Stop log system price - what you have to expect
A custom-made system is a safety-relevant custom-made product.
DIY store vs. made-to-measure: DIY store solutions often only have foam rubber seals, standard widths and no reliable floor sealing. A custom-made product offers precisely fitting guide rails and durable EPDM seals.
Depending on width and height. Tailor-made systems offer greater tightness and are worthwhile due to their long service life.
Which is better: EPDM seal or foam rubber?
EPDM is clearly preferable as it is UV-resistant and retains its elasticity for decades.
How quickly is a stop log system ready for use?
With mounted rails within a few minutes. Simply slide in and tighten.
VII Expert FAQ: Specific customer questions 2026
1. can I also use stop logs on uneven natural stone floors?
Stop log systems require a smooth sealing surface. For uneven natural stone or coarse joints, we recommend inserting a flat stainless steel rail or creating a smooth concrete screed strip. Although our special EPDM floor seals compensate for unevenness of up to 9°, pre-treatment is required for deep natural stone joints.
2. how does the system behave with extreme floating debris (tree trunks, cars)?
Aluminum stop logs (especially the 50mm system) have enormous impact resistance. While sandbags are washed away, the anchored barrier remains stable. Massive floating debris can cause dents, but the function (tightness) is usually maintained as the load is transferred to the solid side rails.
3. does the system have to be completely replaced after use?
No. Unlike sandbags, which have to be disposed of after contact with (often faecal-contaminated) flood water, the aluminum system is simply cleaned and disinfected with a high-pressure cleaner. Only in the event of mechanical deformation of the rails is it advisable to have them inspected by us as a specialist company.
4. does the stop log system also protect against wave impact from passing rescue vehicles?
Yes. This is a problem that is often underestimated: vehicles generate waves that spill over normal barriers or push them in. The mechanical compression of our beams can withstand this dynamic pressure. We recommend an additional safety height (freeboard) of 20 cm.
5. can I secure the dam beams with a padlock?
Yes, we offer special anti-theft devices. As the system is often left unattended in an emergency, the top beams can be secured with a lock so that unauthorized persons cannot dismantle the barrier.also find out about our outdoor storage box
6. is the system suitable for salt water (coastal protection)?
Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer, but is sensitive to permanent salt water. For coastal regions, we offer specially coated or anodized profiles that are corrosion-resistant to sea air and salt water.
7. how difficult is it to set up under extreme stress?
Our systems are optimized for "one-person operation". A 1-meter bar weighs approx. 3 kg. The intuitive tongue and groove system prevents incorrect assembly - assembly is possible within 2-5 minutes per door, even in a panic or in the dark.
8. does the seal lose its clamping force during long storage?
High-quality EPDM has excellent resilience. As long as the beams are not stored under permanent pressure (hence: wall bracket!), they retain their shape for over 15 years.
9. is there a seepage rate (leakage)?
No mobile system is 100% hermetically sealed like a submarine. There is a defined seepage rate in accordance with the PfB standard (a few liters per hour at a dam height of 1 m). These quantities can easily be collected with a water protection cushion.
10. can I also use the system as extinguishing water retention?
Yes, our systems meet the requirements of many fire protection authorities for the retention of extinguishing water in commercial operations in order to prevent the leakage of contaminated extinguishing water.
11. how does aluminum behave in extreme heat (summer floods)?
Aluminum has a high thermal expansion. Our guide rails have integrated expansion joints and the seals compensate for material movement so that the system closes absolutely tightly even at 35°C outside temperature.
12 Why are the rails often higher than the beams?
This provides stability and allows you to upgrade at a later date. If you find that 40 cm protective height is not enough, you can simply purchase additional beams from us, as long as the rails are mounted high enough.
13. does the system also protect against pressing mud (mudslide)?
The dynamic load is extremely high with mudflows. The 50 mm system with reinforced wall anchors must be used here. Aluminum stop logs are the only mobile solution that stands a chance against the viscous mass.
14. can I set the ground socket in concrete myself?
Yes, we supply a template. It is important to align it exactly vertically so that the intermediate column locks into place later without tension.
15. is the system barrier-free?
The guide rails on the wall do not interfere. However, a small sealing edge or the floor sleeve (with cover) remains on the floor. In everyday life, the passage for wheelchairs or baby carriages is 99% barrier-free.
16 Is the system also available in a wood look?
We can powder-coat the rails in any RAL color. The beams themselves usually remain natural aluminum, but can be specially foiled or coated on request to match the house design.
17. can I install stop logs on arched gates?
Yes, here the installation is usually "in front of the wall" (attachment installation). The rectangular barrier covers the round arch from the outside and seals against the smooth façade.
18 How do I clean the floor seal after contact with mud?
Simply clean with a soft brush and water. Important: Do not use solvents, as these can attack the EPDM rubber. Then apply silicone spray.
19 What happens in the event of a power failure and flooding?
This is the advantage of the stop log system: it works purely mechanically. While electric pumps or gates fail in the event of a power failure, your stop log is always ready for use.
20. how long is the delivery time for custom-made products?
As we produce in Austria, delivery times are usually 2-4 weeks. During the flood season, it can take longer - so early provision in spring is ideal.
IX. Help with heavy rain: General questions & problem solutions
41 Which flood protection system is best suited for cellar doors?
For cellar doors, which are often lower than the ground level, a system that can be installed quickly and is absolutely pressure-tight is crucial. An aluminum dam beam system is the most common solution here, as it also fits narrow reveals and effectively seals the entrance in the event of heavy rain.
42 How do I protect a garage driveway from surface water ingress?
If water shoots directly into the garage from the street or yard, a barrier directly in front of the door can help. Mobile barriers made of aluminum are ideal here, as they can span large widths without intermediate supports and do not hinder car access in everyday life as long as there is no threat of flooding.
43 What can you do if water pushes through a closed front door?
Front doors are usually only resistant to driving rain, but cannot withstand standing water. This is where an attachment barrier mounted in front of the door frame can help. A stop log set completely seals the door threshold and diverts the water pressure into the masonry before it reaches the door seals.
44. is there a flood protection for basement windows that can be installed from the outside?
Yes, acrylic glass bulkheads are the most effective method. They are screwed onto the outside of the frame and prevent the light well from becoming an aquarium and the window from bursting under the water pressure.
Cellar window protection with tilt hatch
PROFESSIONAL SOLUTION 2026
Why is the flood barrier with tilting hatch the ultimate solution for building openings?
Basement windows are the most critical weak point in your home during heavy rainfall and flooding. Conventional window frames and glazing are not designed to withstand the massive hydrostatic pressure from outside. Our flood bulkhead made of high-strength acrylic glass is fitted precisely in front of your existing window and seals the opening to make it water pressure-tight.
The highlight of this system: the integrated tilt hatch allows you to ventilate the cellar as usual in everyday life and enjoy daylight. As soon as a storm warning is received, the hatch is locked in a few simple steps - your cellar is completely protected within seconds.
⚠️ Important expert advice on light wells: Many homeowners make the mistake of only covering the light well from above. But be careful: during floods, the groundwater in the soil rises and pushes up from below through the usually open base of the light well. A shaft cover is of no use in this case!
Really effective protection is only possible by securing the cellar window itself. The flood bulkhead reliably keeps the water out of the building even if the entire light well is already completely flooded with groundwater.
Technical details & mounting advantages
The system is characterized by its durability and ease of use:
Material: UV-resistant special acrylic glass that does not yellow.
Seal: Circumferential EPDM high-performance seals for maximum tightness.
Installation: Ideal for self-assembly (D.I.Y.). We supply the complete assembly set including professional sealant.
All-inclusive: On request, we can take care of the complete measurement and installation for you as a specialist company.
Prices & investment: A rigid bulkhead without a hatch is available from around €480. The convenient version as a flood bulkhead with a tilting hatchcosts around €1,550. An investment that prevents renovation costs in the five-figure range in an emergency.
45 How do I quickly seal a driveway gate in heavy rain?
Mobile plug-in systems made of aluminum are unbeatable when time is of the essence. In contrast to sandbags, which have to be laboriously dragged around, aluminum profiles can be inserted into fixed rails within seconds.
46 Which is better: sandbags or permanently installed flood barriers?
Sandbags are a cost-effective disposable solution, but are logistically cumbersome and often leaky. Permanently installed rails with mobile dam beams offer significantly greater safety, can be set up in a fraction of the time and last for decades.
47 How do I prevent flood water from seeping under the door?
Leakage (underflow) is usually caused by uneven floor coverings. A professional system uses soft EPDM floor seals that adapt to minor unevenness. If the paving is very coarse, a smooth sealing edge (screed or rail) should be created.
48. can flood protection be retrofitted to buildings with insulation (full thermal insulation)?
Yes, with special spacer mounts. The barrier is firmly anchored in the masonry without damaging the thermal insulation or creating thermal bridges.
49 Which material is the most durable for flood barriers?
Aluminum is the material of choice. It does not rust, is light enough for quick assembly and does not warp like wood or plastic. In combination with EPDM rubber, this protection lasts for 20-30 years.
50. are there flood protection systems that do not detract from the appearance of the house?
Yes, the guide rails disappear almost completely into the façade with "mortise and tenon installation". The mobile beams are only brought out in an emergency, so that the appearance of the house remains unaffected in everyday life.
51 How do you protect low-lying store and store entrances?
Mobile barriers that are flush-mounted in the reveal are suitable here. They can be deployed at lightning speed at closing time or as a warning and offer security for goods and inventory.
52 What to do if the groundwater in the cellar rises during heavy rainfall?
Barriers on windows and doors are only of limited help here, as the water pushes through the floor slab. A combination of external barriers (to keep surface water out) and powerful waste water pumps is required here.
53 How do you seal wide barn doors or factory entrances?
Reinforced aluminum systems (50 mm profiles) with intermediate supports are used for large spans. These divide up the width and make the individual elements easier to handle.
54. does a simple silicone joint under the door help as flood protection?
No. Silicone is not designed for standing water under pressure. It will be washed out within a very short time. Only mechanically pressed seals offer real safety.
55 How do I protect my house from a flash flood on a slope?
On slopes, the flow velocity of the water is extremely high. Here, massive anchoring of the protection systems is necessary in order to withstand the mechanical pressure of the water masses.
56. can I also install flood protection on round door arches?
Yes, by installing the barrier "in front of the wall" (attachment installation). The rectangular barrier covers the round opening from the outside and seals against the smooth wall.
57 How quickly do you have to react in heavy rain?
Heavy rain events often have lead times of just a few minutes. A system that is buried in the cellar is then of no use. Barriers should be stored ready to hand in wall brackets directly at the place of use.
58 What is the difference between flood protection and heavy rain protection?
Floods usually come slowly from rivers. Heavy rain hits any location unprepared and causes flash floods. A modern stop log system covers both scenarios.
59 What should you look out for when buying flood protection online?
Look out for custom-made products, high-quality EPDM seals and a static test of the material. Standard products from the DIY store rarely fit exactly and often leak.
60 Who provides homeowners with professional advice on property protection?
Specialist flood protection companies analyze weak points on doors, windows and the sewage system and create tailor-made concepts. Contact us for a free initial assessment.
If the façade leaves no space, the guide rails can be fixed directly to the sturdy door frame. An ideal solution for listed buildings or very narrow reveals.
